It is preferable to do this tour on the week-ends Traffic in the city is really
chaotic during the week, and the rush-hour traffic getting there
isn't pleasant at all. Traffic really calms down during the
week-end and so Saturdays and Sundays are the ideal days to tour
Rome. |

| We leave Segni around 8:00 am, heading
for Rome. We will drive on nice country roads the woody Alban Hills,
whose vineyards supply Rome with the famous "Vino dei Castelli".
We'll make a half way rest stop in
Frascati or
Castel Gandolfo.
We'll then make our triumphal arrival in Rome pressing with the
wheels of our scooters the millenary cobblestones of the "Old Appian
Way". We'll see the ruins of the Circus of Maxentius and the tombs of "Romulus" and "Caecilia
Metella" and then finally the walls of
Rome will appear in front of our eyes. Once inside the belt of walls
we'll stop to admire the ruins of the famous
baths of Caracalla.

At a very short distance from
there if the famous Flavian Amphitheatre, better known by
its nick name: the
Colosseum. After visiting the
place we'll finally transfer to the center of the city center and
visit the
Pantheon,
Trevi Fountain,
Piazza Navona,
Spanish
Steps and anything else we'll be able to fit in before moving to the
Vatican to visit
St. Peter's Basilica.
Naturally we'll not follow a set itinerary, we'll have to
move according to several imponderable factors such as
traffic, riding skills etc., so maybe some of the sites may
be left out of the itinerary if we move slow of more places
could be fitted in if we move faster than average. |
|
| For example, you have to go through metal
detectors to go into St. Peter's and the line could be
pretty long sometimes... Riding a scooter through the
streets of Rome in an unforgettable experience which of
course makes everyone think of the famous movie "Roman
Holidays", but please don't imitate Audrey Hepburn in her driving! We
could have lunch sitting outdoors in trattoria, off the
beaten track or on one of the famous piazzas, as well as we
might just snack with a salad or a sandwich in a nice
cafeteria with tables on the sidewalk. To remain faithful to
this "Roman Holidays" atmosphere, of course we'll have to
have an ice-cream somewhere along the way, preferably in
Piazza Navona |

where they serve the
famous "Tartufo". For those who are crazy enough to do it,
we could stop at the lake of Castel Gandolfo on the way back
and go for a swim. In the hot summer months, from mid June
through September, that is very pleasant. Naturally, since
we are evoking "Roman Holidays" we might as well visit all
the places you see in the movie or, if you prefer something
more modern, we can follow the steps of Robert Langdon and
do an "Angels and Demons"
tour! If we do this "Angels and Demons" tour, you'll also have fun
discovering that
Dan Brown took a few "licenses".
Of course as we tour, I'll provide you with all the
information about the places we visit.
|
|
It will not be a detailed guided tour, because Rome is a
very big city with lots of places to see and things to do
and we'll only have a few hours available to us, but you'll
know who built the Colosseum and why for example,
Concluding, whichever kind of tour we do, theme, off the
beaten path if you already know Rome or the basic highlights
if this will be your first time in the city, I can guarantee
you're going to have a great time.
